Understanding The GDPR

Understanding The GDPR

On May 25th, the General Data Protection Regulation (GRPR) became enforceable. In case you haven’t heard about this new legislation, the GDPR is a European Union (EU) regulation, meant to synchronize data privacy laws across Europe. Although the GDPR is an EU regulation, it applies to anyone collecting data about EU citizens. This is true no matter where your business is located.

Under the GDPR, all information that can be used to directly or indirectly identify an EU citizen must be protected. Data covered under the legislation includes, but is not limited to, name, email address, photographs, computer IP address, cookie data, bank details, and medical information.

Companies or individuals collecting data about EU citizens must be able to prove that they have taken the necessary precautions to protect this data. Any breach must be reported within 72 hours.

Failure to comply with the GDPR will result in hefty fines, up to five percent of a company’s global turnover. It is crucial that companies do all they can to remain compliant.

As more and more businesses turn to the cloud, a lot of questions are being raised about companies doing business with, or that have locations or employees in the EU. Many of these companies want to know how the GDPR will affect their business. It’s important you learn all you can about this regulation.

Under the GDPR, any data regarding EU citizens can only be retained for a certain period of time. After this time, the data must be completely deleted. Data stored must be protected under the strict guidelines set by the EU.

As the owner of your company, it is up to you to maintain control of your data and ensure compliance. It’s crucial that you learn where your data is stored, how it is protected, how it can be transferred, and how much access you have. It’s also important to understand how your cloud service provider handles backups and manages retention.

Data Resolution understands the importance of remaining compliant with the GDPR. Our team is standing by ready to help you understand how your data is protected and stored on the cloud. Please contact us for more information.
